Oral Presentation

Posted by Maya Drummond

I think the hardest part of reading the poets for the presentation is trying to figure out what direction you want to take when talking about your poet. I chose two poets who are similar to each other Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Both poets are very exciting poets but I just don’t want to focus to much on how they are similar. Presenting has always been my weakness, so I`m nervous as to if I will be able to meet the time limit.  Honestly I`m just looking forward to the feeling of relief that is going to wash over me when its all over. I can say that reading both poets has influenced me in the way I write. Both poets are known for taking strong stances in whatever they talk about and I truly admire their ability to do so. It`s influenced me to take a stance within my own writing. I think its easy to talk about love but its harder to talk about what is wrong with the world. Maya Angelou is such a beautiful writer. Her poems are filled with imagery and her voice is so peaceful yet powerful. It still amazes me how powerful words can be and how talented some really are. The way things come to Angelou. I wish I had the ability to write in such an eloquent way. I think I really learned a lot through reading  both collections.

Yeah! I agree! I really found it hard to see what direction I wanted to go with myoral presentation. For mine I chose Etheridge Knight and Paul Laurence Dunbar. However once I got used to their writing techniques it wasn't hard for me. Knight tends to use weird and different enjabments - sometimes his lines will end abruuptly, sometimes he'll use hyphens, etc. However, Dunbar uses punctuation kike semi-colins, commas, periods and exclamation marks to end his lines. This helped me link the two together.
